Central is the pulsating heart of Hong Kong Island, where glass-and-steel skyscrapers crowd the skyline and the streets hum with a relentless energy that defines this global city. As the territory's historic and financial core, Central seamlessly layers British colonial heritage, Chinese traditions, and ultramodern architecture. You'll find world-class shopping, a Michelin-starred dining scene, and a surprisingly accessible network of elevated walkways and the iconic Mid-Levels Escalator that make exploring on foot a breeze. For the international traveller, Central offers a concentrated hit of Hong Kong's unique fusion of East and West, all within a compact, walkable area.
Highlights & What to See
- Victoria Peak (The Peak) – Take the historic Peak Tram up to 552 metres for jaw-dropping panoramic views of the harbour and skyscrapers. The Sky Terrace 428 is the highest viewing platform, perfect for sunset photos.
- Mid-Levels Escalator & SoHo – Ride the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system through the bustling streets of SoHo, lined with cool bars, art galleries, and eclectic eateries. Hop off at any point to explore the side streets.
- Bank of China Tower & HSBC Building – Two of Hong Kong's most iconic skyscrapers, designed by I.M. Pei and Norman Foster respectively. Their futuristic forms dominate the skyline and are best admired from Statue Square.
- Man Mo Temple – A serene 19th-century temple dedicated to the gods of literature and war, with massive spiralling incense coils hanging from the ceiling. A calm contrast to the city buzz.
- Hong Kong Park & Edward Youde Aviary – An unexpected green oasis with a large aviary, a lotus pond, and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware. Perfect for a peaceful stroll.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to Central – two if you want to linger. Start the morning with a walk through the colonial-era buildings along Statue Square, then ride the escalator up to SoHo for a late breakfast. Spend the afternoon exploring the temples and parks, and head to The Peak in the late afternoon for sunset. For a longer stay, add a second day to explore the adjacent neighbourhoods of Sheung Wan and Admiralty, or to take a Star Ferry across to Tsim Sha Tsui for the symphony of lights show.
