Hong Kong Dragon's Back
Dragon's Back is Hong Kong's most celebrated urban hike, a sinuous ridge on the southeastern side of Hong Kong Island that delivers jaw-dropping panoramas of the South China Sea, Shek O, and Big Wave Bay. This eight-kilometre trail is a perfect escape from the city's neon chaos, winding through lush secondary forest and open grasslands where the wind whips across the spine of the ridge. The walk is accessible, well-marked, and rewards you with a classic Hong Kong contrast: wild nature against a backdrop of skyscrapers in the distance.
Highlights & What to See
- Shek O Peak viewpoint – the highest point on the ridge offers a 360-degree panorama; on clear days you can see all the way to Lamma Island and the outlying islands.
- Big Wave Bay – after descending the ridge, cool off at this popular surf beach with a laid-back vibe and a handful of casual seafood restaurants.
- Dragon's Back Trail itself – the undulating path is the main event, with constant sea views, photogenic rock formations, and seasonal wildflowers.
- Pottinger Peak Country Park – the trail passes through this protected area, home to diverse birdlife, butterflies, and occasional wild boar.
- To Tei Wan village – a tiny settlement where you can find a simple teahouse or snack stall midway along the route.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers take 2 to 3 hours to complete the full ridge from the starting point at To Tei Wan to Big Wave Bay, including plenty of photo stops. If you want to linger at the beach for lunch or a swim, budget half a day (4–5 hours). The trail is short enough to combine with a morning in Shek O village or an afternoon exploring the nearby Cape D'Aguilar Marine Reserve.
