Hong Kong Dragon's Back

Dragon's Back is Hong Kong's most celebrated urban hike, a sinuous ridge on the southeastern side of Hong Kong Island that delivers jaw-dropping panoramas of the South China Sea, Shek O, and Big Wave Bay. This eight-kilometre trail is a perfect escape from the city's neon chaos, winding through lush secondary forest and open grasslands where the wind whips across the spine of the ridge. The walk is accessible, well-marked, and rewards you with a classic Hong Kong contrast: wild nature against a backdrop of skyscrapers in the distance.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most hikers take 2 to 3 hours to complete the full ridge from the starting point at To Tei Wan to Big Wave Bay, including plenty of photo stops. If you want to linger at the beach for lunch or a swim, budget half a day (4–5 hours). The trail is short enough to combine with a morning in Shek O village or an afternoon exploring the nearby Cape D'Aguilar Marine Reserve.
