Big Wave Bay is a laid-back beachside enclave on the eastern coast of Hong Kong Island, beloved by surfers and hikers alike. Its name comes from the consistent swells that roll in from the South China Sea, making it the city's premier surf spot. The vibe here is relaxed and bohemian, with a small village of low-rise buildings, open-air seafood restaurants, and a sandy beach framed by lush green hills. It's a refreshing escape from the skyscrapers of Central, easily reached by bus or taxi from the MTR.
Highlights & What to See
- Surf the waves – Big Wave Bay is Hong Kong's best surf beach. Board rentals are available, and conditions are best from October to March. Even if you're not surfing, watching the longboarders glide in is a treat.
- Hike the Dragon's Back – This iconic ridge trail starts from the village and offers sweeping views of the coastline, Shek O, and the South China Sea. The 8.5 km loop takes about 2–3 hours and is one of Hong Kong's most popular day hikes.
- Explore the village – The tiny settlement has a few shops, a temple, and outdoor eateries serving fresh seafood and cold beers. Try the grilled squid or seafood fried rice at a beachfront stall.
- Relax on the beach – The soft golden sand and gentle shore break make it a great spot for a swim or a picnic. Lifeguards are on duty during summer weekends.
- Shek O Headland – A short walk south leads to this rocky headland with dramatic cliffs and a small fishing harbour. It's a peaceful spot for photography and sunset views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day here, combining a morning hike on the Dragon's Back with a late lunch and a swim. If you're keen to surf, plan for a full day – arrive early to catch the best waves, break for a seafood lunch, and stay until the sun dips behind the hills. The beach is quieter on weekdays; weekends can be busy but still relaxed.
