The High Island Geo Trail on the New South Wales mid-north coast is a spectacular coastal walk that delivers dramatic sea cliffs, ancient volcanic geology, and uninterrupted ocean views. This 2.5-kilometre return trail, part of the Yuraygir National Park, winds along the headland of High Island—a striking remnant of an extinct volcano—and offers a raw, untamed experience of Australia's east coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Volcanic rock formations: The trail reveals columnar basalt, dykes, and other volcanic features from an ancient eruption, with interpretive signs explaining the geology.
- Dramatic sea cliffs and blowholes: Watch waves crash against the sheer cliffs and, on a rough day, see water spout from the blowholes along the base.
- Panoramic coastal views: From the lookout at the end of the trail, you can see the entire sweep of Yuraygir National Park's coastline, including the Solitary Islands Marine Park.
- Whale watching (May–November): Humpback whales migrate close to shore, and the elevated cliffs provide an excellent vantage point.
- Wildflowers and birdlife: Spring brings a carpet of wildflowers, and you'll likely spot sea eagles, peregrine falcons, and the occasional eastern osprey.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the walk, including time to linger at the lookout and take photos. The trail is short but involves some steep sections and steps, so pace yourself. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon for the best light and to avoid the heat of the day. If you're a keen photographer, plan to spend an extra 30 minutes for sunset shots.
