Hawks Nest is a laid-back coastal village on the northern edge of Port Stephens, where the Myall River meets the sea. Known for its epic sand dunes, uncrowded beaches, and abundant wildlife, it's a favourite escape for families, surfers, and nature lovers. The vibe here is pure beachside simplicity — think fish and chips on the sand, dolphin spotting from the shore, and long walks through coastal heath.
Highlights & What to See
- Worimi Conservation Lands (Stockton Bight Sand Dunes) — Climb the tallest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere; you can sandboard, take a 4WD tour, or simply marvel at the desert-like landscape.
- Bennetts Beach — A stunning, patrolled stretch of sand perfect for swimming, surfing, or just lounging; it's rarely crowded even in peak season.
- Myall River — Kayak or paddleboard along the calm river, where you'll spot pelicans, stingrays, and maybe even a dolphin.
- Jimmy's Beach — A quieter beach on the southern side, great for families with shallow waters and picnic tables.
- Hawks Nest Golf Club — A scenic 18-hole course that winds through bushland and offers views over the river and ocean.
- Mungo Brush Rainforest Walk — A short boardwalk trail through a remnant of littoral rainforest, with towering cabbage tree palms.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience Hawks Nest properly. Spend your first day exploring the dunes and the beach, then dedicate the second to water activities on the Myall River or a bushwalk. If you have a third day, take a day trip to the nearby town of Tea Gardens or cruise the lower Myall River. Hawks Nest is also a perfect stop on a self-drive itinerary between Sydney (3 hours) and the north coast.
