Hahndorf

Just a 25-minute drive from Adelaide’s city centre, Hahndorf feels a world away. Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, founded by Lutheran refugees in 1839, has kept its European soul: gabled stone cottages, half-timbered facades, and the scent of smoked meats and mulled wine drifting down the main street. It’s a place where you can browse artisan galleries, taste small-batch cheeses, and watch a blacksmith work at his forge — all under the dappled shade of century-old elms.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors find a half-day (3–4 hours) enough to explore the main street, visit a gallery, and enjoy a meal. If you want to include The Cedars, Beerenberg Farm, or a longer pub lunch, allow a full day. Hahndorf is also a perfect overnight stop — book a room in a historic B&B to experience the village after the day-trippers have left.
