Just a 25-minute drive from Adelaide’s city centre, Hahndorf feels a world away. Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, founded by Lutheran refugees in 1839, has kept its European soul: gabled stone cottages, half-timbered facades, and the scent of smoked meats and mulled wine drifting down the main street. It’s a place where you can browse artisan galleries, taste small-batch cheeses, and watch a blacksmith work at his forge — all under the dappled shade of century-old elms.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Street (Auricht & Main Streets) — A picture-perfect stretch of historic buildings housing galleries, boutiques, and delis. Don’t miss the Hahndorf Academy, a regional gallery with rotating exhibitions.
- The Cedars — The former home and studio of Sir Hans Heysen, one of Australia’s most celebrated landscape painters. Wander the gardens and see his studio exactly as he left it.
- Beerenberg Farm — Pick your own strawberries (seasonal) and stock up on jams, sauces, and chutneys in the farm shop. The views across the Adelaide Hills are a bonus.
- German-style pubs & bakeries — Settle into the Hahndorf Inn for a stein of German beer and a plate of pork knuckle, or grab a warm pretzel and strudel from the German Cakes Shop.
- Artisan producers — Visit the Hahndorf Lavender Farm, sample cheeses at Udder Delights, and taste small-batch gin at the Hahndorf Distillery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a half-day (3–4 hours) enough to explore the main street, visit a gallery, and enjoy a meal. If you want to include The Cedars, Beerenberg Farm, or a longer pub lunch, allow a full day. Hahndorf is also a perfect overnight stop — book a room in a historic B&B to experience the village after the day-trippers have left.
