Haast is a small settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Tasman Sea crashes against rugged shores and the rainforest-clad mountains of Mount Aspiring National Park rise inland. It's the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu area, offering a raw, untamed landscape that feels like the edge of the world. Travellers come here for dramatic coastal scenery, glacier-carved valleys, and a true sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Ship Creek – A short walk through ancient kahikatea swamp forest leads to a wild beach where driftwood sculptures and pounding surf create a hauntingly beautiful scene.
- Haast River – The turquoise river winds through a deep gorge; stop at the Gates of Haast bridge for panoramic views of the braided waterway.
- Monro Beach Walk – A gentle 30-minute trail through coastal forest to a secluded beach where you might spot Fiordland crested penguins (check season).
- Knight's Point Lookout – A classic roadside stop with sweeping views of the coastline and the Southern Alps meeting the sea.
- Jackson Bay – A 30-minute drive south to a tiny fishing village with a historic wharf, often visited for the famous whitebait fritters at the Craypot café.
- Haast Visitor Centre – Excellent interactive displays on the region's natural and cultural history, plus up-to-date weather and road conditions.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one night in Haast, arriving mid-afternoon and leaving the next morning. This allows time for a couple of short walks (Ship Creek and Monro Beach) and a drive to Jackson Bay for sunset. If you're keen on longer tramps or fishing, budget two nights. The town itself is small, so the focus is on the surrounding natural attractions.
