Haast

Haast is a small settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Tasman Sea crashes against rugged shores and the rainforest-clad mountains of Mount Aspiring National Park rise inland. It's the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu area, offering a raw, untamed landscape that feels like the edge of the world. Travellers come here for dramatic coastal scenery, glacier-carved valleys, and a true sense of isolation.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend one night in Haast, arriving mid-afternoon and leaving the next morning. This allows time for a couple of short walks (Ship Creek and Monro Beach) and a drive to Jackson Bay for sunset. If you're keen on longer tramps or fishing, budget two nights. The town itself is small, so the focus is on the surrounding natural attractions.
