Greymouth

Greymouth, the gateway to the West Coast, is a rugged town where the Grey River meets the Tasman Sea. Its raw beauty, historic pubs, and proximity to wild beaches and forests make it a compelling stop on any South Island road trip. The town's character is shaped by its coal-mining and timber heritage, and visitors will find a friendly, no-frills atmosphere with excellent local seafood and craft beer.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend one night in Greymouth, which allows time to explore the town's highlights and take a day trip to Punakaiki. If you're driving the West Coast, a two-night stay lets you also visit Hokitika and the glaciers further south. Plan at least half a day for Shantytown and a brewery tour, plus a couple of hours for the Pancake Rocks.
