Carved by the Fish River over millennia, Grand Falls Gorge is a dramatic natural spectacle in the Northern Territory's rugged outback. The gorge plunges 30 metres into a deep, narrow chasm, creating a thunderous roar during the wet season. It’s a place of raw beauty, where ancient rock formations meet cascading water, and the surrounding landscape offers a glimpse into the region's rich Indigenous heritage and geological history.
Highlights & What to See
- Grand Falls: The main waterfall itself is spectacular, especially after rains. Stand on the viewing platform to feel the mist and hear the roar as water funnels through the narrow gorge.
- Gorge Walk: A short but steep trail leads to the gorge floor, where you can admire the sheer rock walls and spot water dragons basking on the rocks.
- Scenic Lookouts: Several lookouts along the rim offer panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding savannah woodlands – perfect for photography.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for rainbow bee-eaters, red-tailed black cockatoos, and white-bellied sea eagles soaring overhead.
- Cultural Significance: The area is part of the traditional lands of the Jawoyn people; interpretive signs provide insight into their connection to this landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 1–2 hours to fully appreciate the gorge. If you're visiting in the dry season (May–October), the walk down to the gorge floor is manageable and adds about 30 minutes each way. Combine it with a half-day drive from Katherine or a stop on your way to Litchfield National Park for a rewarding day trip.
