Grand Falls, also known as the 'Niagara of the South,' is a spectacular waterfall on the Wollondilly River near the town of Yerrinbool in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. It's a hidden gem that rewards those who make the short walk with a powerful cascade plunging into a deep gorge, surrounded by lush bushland. This is a fantastic spot for a picnic, photography, and a refreshing dose of nature, especially after rain when the falls are at their most dramatic.
Highlights & What to See
- Grand Falls Lookout: The main attraction is the viewpoint offering a direct face-on view of the waterfall plunging 50 metres into the gorge below. The spray and roar are exhilarating.
- Walking Track: A well-maintained 1.4 km return walk from the carpark leads through eucalypt forest to the lookout. It's easy and suitable for most fitness levels, with some steps near the end.
- Picnic Area: There are picnic tables and benches near the carpark, making it a lovely spot for a packed lunch surrounded by towering trees and birdlife.
- Seasonal Wildflowers: In spring, the bushland comes alive with native wildflowers, adding splashes of colour to the walk.
- Wollondilly River: After heavy rain, the river itself is a sight to behold, with cascades upstream and downstream of the main falls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about 1 to 1.5 hours at Grand Falls, which includes the walk to the lookout, time to soak in the views, and a picnic. If you're a keen photographer or just want to relax, you could easily stretch it to 2 hours. The walk is short, so it's a perfect quick stop on a road trip through the Southern Highlands.
