Gornergrat
Perched at 3,089 metres above sea level, Gornergrat is one of Switzerland's most accessible high-altitude viewpoints, offering a jaw-dropping panorama of the Monte Rosa massif and the Gorner Glacier. Reached by a scenic cogwheel train from Zermatt, this rocky ridge feels like the rooftop of the Alps – a place where the air is thin and the views are impossibly vast. Whether you come for sunrise photography, a gentle high-altitude walk, or simply to sip a hot chocolate while staring at the Matterhorn, Gornergrat delivers an experience that lingers long after you descend.
Highlights & What to See
- The View from the Top – From the viewing platform, you can see 29 peaks over 4,000 metres, including the iconic Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. On clear days, the panorama stretches across Switzerland and into Italy.
- Gornergrat Railway – The highest open-air cogwheel railway in Europe, this 33-minute ride from Zermatt is an experience in itself, passing through larch forests, alpine meadows, and past the Riffelsee lake.
- Gorner Glacier – Europe's second-largest glacier system spreads out below the ridge. In summer, you can join a guided glacier walk or simply admire its crevassed tongue from above.
- Zooom the Matterhorn (Zooom the Matterhorn) – A small but fascinating exhibition about the region's geology, wildlife, and the construction of the railway, located inside the summit station.
- Riffelsee Reflection – On the way down, stop at Riffelberg for the iconic photo of the Matterhorn reflected in the still waters of Riffelsee – best captured in the early morning.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at the top, including the train ride up and down. For photographers and hikers, plan a half-day: take the first train up for sunrise (around 6:30 am in summer), explore the summit trails, and descend via the Riffelsee stop. If you want to hike from Gornergrat down to Rotenboden or Riffelberg, allow 4–5 hours total. The last train down is usually around 5:30 pm, so check the timetable.
