Gorner Grat
Perched at 3,130 metres above Zermatt, the Gorner Grat is one of Switzerland's most jaw-dropping viewpoints. The cogwheel train ride up from Zermatt is an experience in itself, winding through larch forests and past the Gorner Glacier before emerging onto a rocky ridge where you're surrounded by 29 peaks over 4,000 metres, including the iconic Matterhorn. The air is thin, the views are endless, and the sense of being on top of the world is palpable.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic Terrace: Step off the train onto the viewing platform for a 360-degree sweep of Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, and the Gorner Glacier – the second-largest glacier in the Alps.
- Gorner Glacier Viewpoint: A short walk from the station leads to a dramatic overlook of the glacier's crevassed surface and the surrounding icefall.
- Hiking Trails: The Rotenboden and Riffelsee trails offer classic alpine scenery with reflective lakes and wildflower meadows in summer.
- Sunrise & Sunset Visits: Early or late trains allow you to experience the alpenglow on the peaks – an unforgettable spectacle for photographers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at the top, including the train ride up and down. For hikers, plan a half-day to combine the train with a walk down to Riffelsee or Rotenboden. The first train up is usually around 7am; arriving early means fewer crowds and clearer light. If you're short on time, a quick 1.5-hour round trip is still worthwhile for the view alone.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Zermatt: The car-free village at the foot of the Matterhorn is perfect for exploring before or after your trip up the Gorner Grat.
- Gornergrat Railway: The cogwheel train itself is a heritage experience – consider a round trip with stops at Riffelalp or Riffelberg for lunch.
- Riffelsee: A short detour from the Rotenboden station leads to a lake famous for its Matterhorn reflection.
- Monte Rosa Hut: For experienced hikers, a guided trek from the Gorner Grat to this high-altitude hut offers a full-day adventure.
