Gorges Du Toulourenc
Carved by the crystal-clear Toulourenc River through the Vaucluse plateau, the Gorges du Toulourenc is a wild, narrow canyon that offers one of Provence’s most refreshing natural escapes. Unlike the crowded lavender fields, this gorge is a secret world of emerald pools, limestone cliffs and dappled light filtering through oak and pine. The river is the draw: in summer, locals and savvy travellers wade, swim and slide down natural chutes in the cool, fast-flowing water. This is a place for getting your feet wet — literally — and feeling the raw, untamed side of the Luberon.
Highlights & What to See
- River walking and swimming: The main activity is hiking up the riverbed itself, hopping from rock to rock and plunging into deep, clear pools. Water shoes are essential.
- Natural water slides: Smooth limestone chutes create exhilarating natural slides — the most famous is the ‘Toboggan’, a short but thrilling ride into a pool.
- Scenic canyon views: The cliffs rise dramatically on either side, with twisted roots, mossy walls and the occasional tiny beach. Early morning light is magical.
- Picnicking by the river: There are several shady spots along the banks perfect for a Provençal picnic of bread, cheese and rosé.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for kingfishers, dippers and, if you’re lucky, the occasional otter.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the gorge — allow at least 3 to 4 hours to hike up the river, swim and slide. If you want a more relaxed pace, bring a picnic and spend the whole afternoon. The gorge is best visited in the morning before the crowds arrive (and when the light is best). Note that access can be restricted after heavy rain due to flash-flood risk, so check conditions locally.
