Perched like a stone crown on the edge of the Luberon Valley, Gordes is one of Provence's most photographed hilltop villages. Its honey-coloured houses tumble down the hillside, crowned by a Renaissance castle that seems to grow from the rock itself. The village is a feast for the eyes, with narrow cobbled lanes opening onto vertiginous views of lavender fields and vineyards below. While it draws crowds, Gordes rewards early birds with serene mornings and a palpable sense of medieval history.
Highlights & What to See
- Château de Gordes: This imposing 16th-century castle houses a museum of contemporary art and a fascinating exhibit on the history of the village. Don't miss the terrace for sweeping valley views.
- Village des Bories: A short walk or drive from the centre, this open-air museum of dry-stone huts (bories) offers a glimpse into Neolithic and medieval rural life. Wander among the beehive-shaped structures.
- Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque: Just 4 km north, this living Cistercian abbey is set in a valley carpeted with lavender (peak bloom: late June to mid-July). The monks still chant Gregorian hymns; attend a service for a transcendent experience.
- Église Saint-Firmin: The 18th-century parish church with a striking bell tower and a serene interior featuring a wooden altarpiece.
- Panorama from the Belvédère: The viewpoint near the tourist office offers the classic postcard shot of Gordes cascading down the hill.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day (3–4 hours) is enough to explore the village core, visit the château and wander the lanes. If you plan to see the Abbaye de Sénanque and the Village des Bories, allow a full day. For a relaxed pace, arrive by 9 am before the tour buses, enjoy a long lunch at a café on the Place du Château, and linger into the golden hour light.
