Gladstone, a coastal city in Queensland's Capricornia region, is the industrial powerhouse of the Coral Coast, yet it also serves as a gateway to the stunning Southern Great Barrier Reef. With its deep-water port and massive LNG plants, Gladstone might seem all business, but dig a little deeper and you'll find a vibrant waterfront, rich marine life, and a surprising food scene that makes it a worthy stop on any Queensland road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Heron Island & Wilson Island – These coral cays offer world-class snorkelling and diving with manta rays, turtles, and colourful reef fish. Heron Island is a resort and research station; Wilson Island is a more exclusive eco-retreat.
- Lady Elliot Island – A pristine coral cay at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, famous for manta rays, turtles, and the chance to see migrating humpback whales (June–October).
- Tannum Sands & Boyne Island – Twin beachside towns with calm waters for swimming, a scenic coastal walk linking them, and a laid-back vibe perfect for a beach day.
- Gladstone Marina & East Shores – A modern waterfront precinct with a playground, picnic areas, a swimming lagoon, and plenty of cafes and restaurants offering water views.
- Calliope River Historical Village – Step back in time at this open-air museum featuring restored pioneer buildings, steam engines, and a blacksmith shop, set among peaceful bushland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 1–2 nights in Gladstone itself, using it as a base for island day trips. If you're keen to explore the nearby islands and the coastal parks, allow at least 3–4 days. The city centre can be seen in a few hours, but the real magic lies offshore. Plan your visit between April and November for the best weather and reef conditions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Agnes Water & 1770 – The northernmost surf beaches in Queensland and the historic town of 1770, where Captain Cook first landed. Great for kayaking, fishing, and sunset cruises.
- Rockhampton & Great Keppel Island – Rockhampton, the beef capital, is just over an hour south, and from there you can hop to Great Keppel Island with its stunning beaches and bushwalks.
- Bundaberg – Famous for Bundaberg Rum and the nearby Southern Great Barrier Reef islands, including Lady Musgrave Island and the turtle nesting sites at Mon Repos.
- Cania Gorge National Park – A hidden gem inland with sandstone cliffs, walking trails, and a peaceful lake for swimming and canoeing.
