Gilimanuk
Gilimanuk is a sleepy port town at the western tip of Bali, serving as the main ferry gateway to and from Java. While most travellers rush through on their way to the national park or the ferry, those who pause find a raw, untamed side of Bali — muddy mangrove creeks, black-sand beaches, and a palpable frontier atmosphere. This is less a destination than a strategic stop, but one with surprising rewards for the curious.
Highlights & What to See
- Bali Barat National Park — Gilimanuk is the launchpad for treks into this protected wilderness. Join a guided walk to spot deer, monkeys, and the elusive Bali starling; the mangrove boardwalk near the park office is an easy intro.
- Pura Gede Luhur — A serene sea temple perched on a cliff overlooking the Bali Strait. Visit at sunset for dramatic views of Java’s volcanoes across the water.
- Gilimanuk Bay Mangrove Forest — Explore the dense mangroves by boat or kayak; keep an eye out for kingfishers, herons, and monitor lizards.
- Black Sand Beach — The volcanic shoreline just south of the ferry terminal offers a stark, moody seascape perfect for a quiet stroll or a picnic away from the crowds.
- Menjangan Island — A short boat ride from the coast, this protected island boasts some of Bali’s best snorkelling and diving, with pristine coral gardens and clear water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors pass through in under an hour, but to appreciate Gilimanuk’s wild surrounds, allow at least half a day. Arrive early to catch the morning wildlife activity in the national park, then spend the afternoon snorkelling at Menjangan or exploring the mangroves. If you’re overnighting, a single night is sufficient to break the ferry journey and enjoy a sunset at the temple.
