Gerringong is a laid-back coastal town on the South Coast of New South Wales, a short drive south of Kiama. With its rolling green hills cascading down to dramatic sea cliffs and a string of uncrowded beaches, it feels like a secret escape from the busy holiday spots further north. The town retains a genuine farming-meets-surfing character, with a handful of excellent cafés and a friendly community vibe. Whether you're here for a surf, a coastal walk, or simply to watch the sunset over the Pacific, Gerringong delivers a quintessential Australian beach-town experience without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Seven Mile Beach National Park – A stunning stretch of sandy beach backed by dunes and coastal heath, perfect for swimming, surfing, and long walks. The park also protects a significant Aboriginal cultural landscape.
- Gerringong to Kiama Coastal Walk – A spectacular 8 km cliff-top track with panoramic ocean views, passing through farmland, rainforest pockets, and historic sites. Allow 2–3 hours one way.
- Werri Beach – The main surf beach, patrolled in summer, with consistent waves and a relaxed vibe. Great for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
- Crooked River Wines – A boutique winery set on a hillside with cellar-door tastings and a lovely café. Their cool-climate wines, especially the Semillon, are a standout.
- Gerringong Heritage Walk – A self-guided tour past historic buildings including the 1879 Gerringong School of Arts and the charming Presbyterian Church.
Suggested Time to Spend
Gerringong is best enjoyed as a relaxed day trip from Kiama or as a stopover on a South Coast road trip. With one full day you can tackle the coastal walk in the morning, enjoy a picnic at Werri Beach, and visit the winery in the afternoon. For a more leisurely pace, an overnight stay allows you to catch sunrise over the ocean and explore the quieter beaches. Two days would be ample to also visit nearby Kiama and the Minnamurra Rainforest.
