Genoa is a tiny, off-grid settlement in far eastern Victoria, just a stone’s throw from the NSW border. It’s the gateway to the Croajingolong National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and offers a blissful escape into wild coastal bushland. This is a place for those who crave solitude, starry skies, and the sound of waves crashing on empty beaches. The Genoa River meanders through town, perfect for a paddle or a cooling dip. The local pub, the Genoa Hotel, is a beloved pit stop for travellers on the Princes Highway, serving hearty meals and cold beers.
Highlights & What to See
- Croajingolong National Park – A pristine wilderness of heathlands, rainforest gullies, and long sandy beaches. Hike the Wilderness Coast Walk for dramatic ocean views and spot kangaroos at dusk.
- Genoa River – Canoe or kayak upstream through serene bushland; you might see platypuses at dawn or dusk. Swimming holes are scattered along its length.
- Point Hicks Lighthouse – Climb this historic lighthouse for panoramic views of the Bass Strait. The surrounding coastal heath is ablaze with wildflowers in spring.
- Mueller Inlet – A tranquil estuary where the river meets the sea. Ideal for birdwatching, fishing, or a quiet picnic.
- Genoa Hotel – A classic country pub with a beer garden and local character. Try the seafood basket or a parma after a day of exploring.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to properly explore the national park and unwind. Spend the first day hiking a section of the Wilderness Coast Walk and kayaking the river. Dedicate the second day to a drive to Point Hicks and a lazy afternoon at Mueller Inlet. If you have a third day, consider a longer hike or simply relax by the river with a book. Genoa is also a perfect overnight stop on a road trip between Melbourne and Sydney.
