Just north of Natal, the Genipabu Sand Dunes are a surreal landscape of shifting white sands, freshwater lagoons, and Atlantic coastline. This is Brazil’s dune buggy capital, where you can race across the dunes in a 4×4 or glide on a sandboard. The area is also known for its ecological reserve, home to coastal birds and the rare crab-eating fox. For international travellers, Genipabu offers a thrilling outdoor adventure that’s easy to combine with the beaches and culture of nearby Natal.
Highlights & What to See
- Dune buggy rides – The classic experience: hold tight as your driver powers over 40-metre-high dunes, with optional “aerobics” (roller-coaster-like drops). Choose between a simple tour or the full “with emotion” ride.
- Sandboarding – Rent a board and slide down the steep faces of the dunes. Beginners can start on gentler slopes; experts head for the big ones.
- Lagoa de Genipabu – A freshwater lagoon nestled among the dunes, perfect for a cooling dip after the buggy ride. You can also rent a pedal boat or kayak.
- Ecological trails – Walk or cycle along marked paths through the restinga (coastal scrub) to spot native wildlife and enjoy panoramic views.
- Sunset from the dunes – The shifting colours over the sand and sea are unforgettable. Many buggy tours time their return for sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day at Genipabu, combining a dune buggy ride (1–2 hours) with time at the lagoon and a beachside lunch. If you want to add sandboarding or a longer ecological walk, plan for a full day. Early morning or late afternoon are best to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Genipabu is also easily done as a morning trip from Natal, leaving the afternoon for the city’s historic centre or the beach.
