Gandia is a relaxed coastal town on the Costa del Azahar, north of Valencia, with a gorgeous stretch of golden sand, a historic old town, and a lively food scene. It’s an ideal spot for a beach break or as a base for exploring the region’s nature and culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Platja de Gandia – a long, wide beach of fine golden sand with calm waters, backed by a palm-lined promenade full of cafes and restaurants. Perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and long walks.
- Castell de Bairén – the ruins of a 9th-century Moorish castle perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the coast and surrounding orange groves. A short hike from the town.
- Old Town (Casc Antic) – wander narrow streets with Gothic and Renaissance buildings, including the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria and the Ducal Palace of the Borgias, a former residence of the infamous Borgia family.
- Mercat Municipal – a bustling market hall where you can sample local produce like oranges, olives, and cheeses, plus fresh seafood from the nearby port.
- Marjal de la Safor Natural Park – a wetland area just south of town, great for birdwatching and walking trails through rice paddies and marshlands.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal: spend one day on the beach and strolling the promenade, another exploring the old town and castle, and a third for a day trip to nearby nature or villages. If you’re short on time, a single day can cover the beach and old town highlights.
