Hidden in the lush mountains of northern Taiwan, Fushan Botanical Garden is a serene escape into subtropical rainforest. Managed by the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute, this living laboratory showcases the island's incredible plant diversity, from towering tree ferns to rare orchids. The garden's network of trails winds through pristine forest alongside crystal-clear streams, offering a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and birdwatchers. It's a place where the air smells of damp earth and wild ginger, and the soundtrack is a chorus of cicadas and bird calls.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Nature Trail – A gentle 1.5-km loop that crosses wooden bridges over babbling brooks, passing giant camphor trees and a canopy of Formosan gum. Keep an eye out for the endemic Swinhoe's pheasant.
- Plant Collection Areas – Themed gardens showcase Taiwan's native flora, including medicinal plants, bamboos, and a fascinating fern valley where ancient tree ferns create a prehistoric atmosphere.
- Streamside Walk – Follow the clear waters of the Fushan Creek, where you might spot Taiwanese river crabs and fireflies (in season). The sound of rushing water accompanies you throughout.
- Butterfly & Bird Watching – The garden is a hotspot for birdlife (over 100 species recorded) and butterflies, especially along the sunny edges of the trails. Bring binoculars for best views.
- Interpretive Center – A small museum with exhibits on forest ecology, complete with a 3D model of the watershed and displays on local wildlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about half a day (3–4 hours) exploring the main trails and the interpretive center. If you're a keen birdwatcher or botanist, plan for a full day to thoroughly enjoy the quieter paths and observe wildlife. The garden is best visited in the morning when the forest is cool and birds are most active. Combine it with a trip to nearby Yilan or the northeast coast for a full day out from Taipei.
