Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just 300 metres above sea level. The sheer scale of the ice — a 12-kilometre tongue of ancient frozen water — is breathtaking, and the ever-changing face of the glacier means no two visits are the same. The small, laid-back township of Franz Josef provides a perfect base, with a friendly pub, a handful of excellent cafés, and a strong Māori cultural presence (the glacier is known as Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere — the tears of the avalanche girl). Whether you're here for a heli-hike, a guided ice walk, or simply to soak in the views from the valley floor, this is an essential stop on any West Coast road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one full day and one night in Franz Josef. Arrive in the late afternoon, take the Sentinel Rock Walk for a warm-up, then book a guided glacier walk or heli-hike for the next morning. If you're combining it with Fox Glacier (30 minutes south), allow two days to explore both glaciers thoroughly. The valley floor walkways are quick (30–60 minutes), but the full guided experiences take 3–4 hours, so plan accordingly.
