Fota Wildlife Park
Just 15 minutes from Cork city, Fota Wildlife Park is a sprawling 100-acre open-range zoo set on a historic island estate. Unlike traditional zoos, many animals roam freely in spacious paddocks while visitors walk among them on raised boardwalks. It’s a fantastic day out for families and wildlife enthusiasts, combining conservation with an immersive, uncaged experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Cheetah Run – Watch cheetahs sprint at full speed during daily demonstrations; it’s one of the park’s most thrilling moments.
- African Savannah – See giraffes, zebras, and ostriches sharing a vast open plain; you can walk right through the habitat.
- Monkey Islands – Playful ring-tailed lemurs and agile gibbons swing overhead on islands surrounded by water.
- Kangaroo Walkabout – Meet red and grey kangaroos up close in a free-roaming enclosure – a favourite for kids.
- Fota House & Gardens – The park sits within the grounds of a 19th-century manor; explore the arboretum and formal gardens for a cultural side trip.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day (3–4 hours) to cover the main loops and catch the animal talks. Arrive early to avoid crowds, especially in summer. If you’re a keen photographer or have little ones, a full day gives you time to revisit favourites and enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawns.
