Forte dos Reis Magos

Perched at the mouth of the Potengi River, the star-shaped Forte dos Reis Magos is the birthplace of Natal and one of Brazil's most evocative colonial fortifications. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, this well-preserved fortress offers sweeping views of the Atlantic and the city's famous dunes. Inside, a small museum traces the fort's role in defending the coast, while the thick stone walls and original cannons transport you back to the age of exploration.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate about 1.5 to 2 hours to fully explore the fort and museum. Arrive in the late afternoon to catch the sunset over the river; you can then stroll along the nearby beach or head into the Ribeira district for dinner. The fort is easily combined with a morning at the Dune Buggy tour in Genipabu or a cultural walk through Natal's historic centre.
