Fortaleza de Santa Teresa
Perched on a hilltop overlooking the resort town of Punta del Este, Fortaleza de Santa Teresa is a meticulously restored 18th-century Portuguese fortress that doubles as a fascinating open-air museum. Its thick stone walls, original cannons, and sweeping ocean views make it one of Uruguay's most evocative historical sites. The fortress houses a military museum with colonial artifacts, and the surrounding national park offers hiking trails through coastal forests and dunes.
Highlights & What to See
- Wander the ramparts – walk the fortress walls for panoramic views of the Atlantic and the Laguna Negra.
- Explore the military museum – housed inside the fortress, it displays weapons, uniforms, and relics from the colonial era.
- Visit the chapel – a small, restored 18th-century chapel within the fortress walls.
- Hike in Santa Teresa National Park – the surrounding park has trails through sand dunes, palm groves, and coastal forest, with opportunities for birdwatching.
- Head to the beach – the park includes Playa de la Viuda, a wild, undeveloped stretch of sand perfect for a quiet swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
