Florence Falls is a stunning double-drop waterfall plunging into a pristine plunge pool within Litchfield National Park, about a 90-minute drive south of Darwin. This natural oasis is one of the Top End's most beloved swimming holes, offering a refreshing escape from the tropical heat. The falls cascade over a sandstone escarpment into a deep, clear pool surrounded by monsoon vine forest, making it a picture-perfect spot for a dip and a picnic.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the plunge pool: The main attraction is the large, deep pool beneath the falls. The water is cool and inviting, with a sandy bottom and plenty of space to float or splash around. Lifeguards are not present, so swim with care.
- Florence Creek Walk: A 1.2 km loop trail that takes you through lush monsoon forest, past smaller cascades and rock pools. It's an easy, family-friendly walk with opportunities to spot birds, butterflies, and native plants.
- Upper viewing platform: A short, steep climb from the car park leads to a platform offering a bird's-eye view of the falls and the surrounding escarpment. It's a great spot for photos, especially in the late afternoon light.
- Picnic facilities: There are shaded picnic tables and barbecue areas near the car park, making it easy to enjoy a meal in the bush. Keep an eye out for agile wallabies and goannas that sometimes wander through.
- Seasonal flow: The falls are most spectacular during the wet season (November to April), but the pool is swimmable year-round. In the dry season, the flow reduces to a trickle, yet the pool remains a lovely place to cool off.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 2–3 hours to fully enjoy Florence Falls. This gives you time to swim, hike the Florence Creek Walk, and relax with a picnic. If you're combining it with other Litchfield highlights like Wangi Falls or Buley Rockhole, a full day in the park is ideal. Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds, especially on weekends and during school holidays.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wangi Falls: Another iconic swimming spot with a larger pool and a café, just a 15-minute drive away. It's more developed but equally beautiful.
- Buley Rockhole: A series of natural rock pools connected by small cascades, perfect for a gentle soak and a picnic. It's only 5 minutes from Florence Falls.
- Tolmer Falls: A dramatic single-drop waterfall with a lookout over the gorge. Swimming is not permitted, but the views are spectacular.
- Litchfield National Park: Explore the park's other highlights, including termite mounds, magnetic termite mounds, and the Lost City sandstone formations.
- Darwin: The gateway city to the Top End, with its vibrant markets, multicultural food scene, and cultural attractions like the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
