Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway
Utah’s Flaming Gorge Scenic Byway (US-191) is a breathtaking 44-mile drive through a high-desert landscape of crimson cliffs, pine forests, and the shimmering Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Named by John Wesley Powell for its fiery red rocks at sunset, this route offers a quintessential American road trip with dramatic overlooks, world-class fishing, and opportunities to spot bighorn sheep and pronghorn. The byway is part of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, where the Green River carves a deep canyon through ancient geology.
Highlights & What to See
- Flaming Gorge Dam – A 502-foot concrete arch dam; visit the visitor center for exhibits on the area’s geology and construction history, then walk across the dam for vertiginous views of the canyon.
- Red Canyon Overlook – A short walk leads to a jaw-dropping panorama of the red-rock canyon and the reservoir’s turquoise waters.
- Sheep Creek Geological Loop – A 13-mile side drive offering close-up views of the Uinta Mountains’ folded rock layers and a good chance of seeing bighorn sheep.
- Flaming Gorge Reservoir – Perfect for boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding; the clear water is ideal for swimming at designated beaches like Lucerne Valley.
- Green River below the dam – A world-renowned trout fishery; even if you don’t fish, the emerald-green water and canyon walls are stunning.
- Dowd Mountain Overlook – A lesser-known viewpoint with a picnic area and sweeping views of the reservoir and surrounding forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day to drive the byway and make short stops at the main viewpoints and the dam. If you want to hike, fish, or paddle, plan for a full day. For a leisurely pace, combine the byway with an overnight stay at one of the lodges or campgrounds along the reservoir. The drive itself takes about 1.5 hours without stops, but you’ll want to allow 3–4 hours to fully appreciate the scenery.
