Perched at 1,049 metres in the Goms region of Valais, Fiesch is the gateway to the Aletsch Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This traditional Swiss village combines Alpine charm with easy access to one of Europe's most dramatic ice landscapes. With its sunny, south-facing position, it offers an intimate base for hikers, skiers, and glacier adventurers – far less crowded than Zermatt or Jungfrau, yet equally spectacular.
Highlights & What to See
- Aletsch Glacier viewpoint – Take the cable car from Fiesch to Eggishorn (2,927 m) for a jaw-dropping panorama of the 23-km-long Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps. On clear days, you can see from Mont Blanc to the Jungfrau region.
- Fiescheralp & Märjelen Lake – Ride the gondola to Fiescheralp, then hike to the turquoise Märjelen Lake, where icebergs calve from the glacier's snout. The 20-minute walk is family-friendly.
- Goms Valley villages – Explore the historic, sun-baked hamlets of the Goms region, such as Ernen and Münster, known for their blackened wooden chalets and Baroque churches. The valley is a paradise for gentle cycling and cultural walks.
- Rhône Glacier – A short drive or bus ride east leads to the source of the Rhône River, where you can walk inside the glacier ice cave (seasonal).
- Winter skiing & snowshoeing – Fiesch is part of the Aletsch Arena ski area, with 104 km of pistes suitable for intermediates, plus extensive winter hiking trails through snowy larch forests.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least two days to fully absorb the glacier scenery and valley culture. Day one: ride up to Eggishorn in the morning for the glacier panorama, then descend to hike around Märjelen Lake. Day two: explore the Goms villages by bike or bus, and visit the Rhône Glacier. If you're a keen hiker, add a third day for the multi-stage Aletsch Panorama Trail.
