Emerald, a charming town in the Central Highlands of Queensland, is the gateway to the sapphire gemfields and a hub for the region's rich agricultural and mining heritage. With its wide streets, historic buildings, and friendly locals, Emerald offers a genuine outback experience combined with modern comforts. The town is surrounded by vast cattle stations and cotton fields, and its proximity to the gemfields makes it a must-visit for anyone interested in fossicking for precious stones.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to explore Emerald and its surrounds. Spend your first day visiting the gemfields – many visitors end up fossicking for hours. The second day can be split between Fairbairn Dam and the botanic gardens. If you have a third day, consider a drive to the nearby Carnarvon Gorge or Blackwater for a deeper look at the region's coal mining heritage. Emerald is also a great overnight stop on a self-drive trip between the coast and the outback.
