With its wide streets, historic buildings, and friendly locals, Emerald offers a genuine outback experience combined with modern comforts. The town is surrounded by vast cattle stations and cotton fields, and its proximity to the gemfields makes it a must-visit for anyone interested in fossicking for precious stones.
Highlights & What to See
- Emerald Gemfields: Head to the nearby towns of Sapphire, Rubyvale, and Anakie to try your hand at fossicking for sapphires. You can hire equipment and get tips from local miners – finding your own gem is an unforgettable thrill.

Two to three days is ideal to explore Emerald and its surrounds. Spend your first day visiting the gemfields – many visitors end up fossicking for hours.
