Perched dramatically on a cliff edge in northern Lanzarote, El Mirador Del Rio is one of the island's most iconic viewpoints, offering jaw-dropping panoramas across the turquoise strait to the untouched islet of La Graciosa. Designed by the visionary local artist César Manrique, this lookout seamlessly blends into the volcanic rock, with sweeping curved windows that frame the Atlantic like a living painting. It's a must-stop for anyone driving the island's scenic northern route, combining art, nature, and a sense of serene isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- The Viewpoint Itself – Marvel at Manrique's architectural genius: a cantilevered balcony built into the 400-metre-high cliffs, with floor-to-ceiling windows that make you feel suspended over the ocean. On a clear day, you can see the entire Chinijo Archipelago.
- La Graciosa – The star of the view is this sleepy, car-free island with golden beaches and a laid-back vibe. It's a protected part of the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park, accessible by ferry from Órzola.
- Mirador Café-Bar – Grab a coffee or a light bite at the on-site café, where the same spectacular views continue. It's a perfect spot to pause and soak in the scenery.
- Nearby Haría Valley – Known as the 'Valley of a Thousand Palms', this lush green valley contrasts starkly with the surrounding volcanic landscape. The village of Haría itself has whitewashed houses and a charming Sunday market.
- Cueva de los Verdes – A short drive away, this lava tube offers an underground tour through volcanic caverns, with dramatic lighting and a concert hall inside a bubble of rock.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for about 30–45 minutes at the mirador itself, allowing time to walk around the viewpoint, snap photos, and enjoy a drink. If you combine it with a visit to Haría or a trip down to the coast at Órzola (for the ferry to La Graciosa), you can easily fill a half-day. The northern route from Teguise or Arrecife is a scenic drive worth taking slowly.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Órzola – The fishing village at the northern tip, departure point for ferries to La Graciosa. Its small harbour and seafood restaurants make for a pleasant stop.
- Haría – Explore the whitewashed village, the César Manrique Foundation's former home (now a museum), and the lush valley.
- Cueva de los Verdes – A fascinating volcanic cave tour, just a few minutes south of the mirador.
- Jameos del Agua – Another Manrique masterpiece, a concert hall and swimming pool built inside a collapsed lava tube, with a unique ecosystem of blind albino crabs.
- Playa de las Conchas – On La Graciosa, this wild beach is one of the most beautiful in the Canaries, reachable only by foot or bike from the ferry port.
