Dunas do Jalapão
Welcome to the otherworldly landscapes of Dunas do Jalapão, a remote and pristine region in Brazil’s state of Tocantins that feels like a lost world of golden sand dunes, crystal-clear rivers, and dramatic canyons. This is a place for true adventurers: there are no paved roads, and the journey here is as epic as the destination. You’ll traverse bumpy dirt tracks through the Cerrado savanna, passing stands of buriti palms and listening to the calls of macaws. The reward? Endless dunes that shift colour from ochre to amber in the changing light, and freshwater springs so pure you’ll want to dive in immediately.
Highlights & What to See
- Dunas themselves – The main attraction: a 20 km stretch of sand dunes reaching up to 40 m high. Climb to the top for panoramic views and feel the fine sand between your toes. At sunset, the dunes glow like molten gold.
- Fervedouro do Ceiça – A natural spring with a strong underwater current that creates a buoyant sensation, as if you’re floating in a Jacuzzi. The crystal-clear water is surrounded by lush vegetation.
- Cachoeira da Velha – A powerful waterfall on the Novo River, with a 100 m wide cascade that plunges into a deep pool. It’s a perfect spot for a refreshing swim after a hot day.
- Serra do Espírito Santo – A stunning canyon with sheer rock walls and a river running through it. Hike along the rim for breathtaking views, or cool off in the natural pools below.
- Jalapão State Park – This protected area encompasses most of the region’s wonders, including the dunes, waterfalls, and fervedouros. It’s also home to wildlife like giant anteaters, maned wolves, and toucans.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a minimum of 4 to 5 days to experience the highlights without rushing. Most visitors base themselves in the small town of Mateiros (the gateway) and do day trips by 4WD. The best way to pace it: two days for the dunes and fervedouros, one day for waterfalls and canyons, and a final day for the state park and river activities. If you have more time, consider a 7-day expedition to explore deeper into the Cerrado and visit the remote village of Mumbuca.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Palmas – The capital of Tocantins, about 200 km south, with good infrastructure, an airport, and the starting point for most Jalapão tours.
- Chapada dos Veadeiros – Another stunning national park in neighbouring Goiás, known for its quartz crystal landscapes and waterfalls. Combine both for an epic two-week adventure.
- Rio da Conceição – A charming small town with a beautiful river beach and easy access to the Jalapão region’s eastern side.
- Mumbuca – A quilombo (descendant of escaped slaves) community that offers cultural experiences, handicrafts, and traditional cuisine.
- Ponte Alta do Tocantins – A town on the edge of the state park, with access to the Novo River and several fervedouros.
