Dunas do Jalapão

Welcome to the otherworldly landscapes of Dunas do Jalapão, a remote and pristine region in Brazil’s state of Tocantins that feels like a lost world of golden sand dunes, crystal-clear rivers, and dramatic canyons. This is a place for true adventurers: there are no paved roads, and the journey here is as epic as the destination. You’ll traverse bumpy dirt tracks through the Cerrado savanna, passing stands of buriti palms and listening to the calls of macaws. The reward? Endless dunes that shift colour from ochre to amber in the changing light, and freshwater springs so pure you’ll want to dive in immediately.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a minimum of 4 to 5 days to experience the highlights without rushing. Most visitors base themselves in the small town of Mateiros (the gateway) and do day trips by 4WD. The best way to pace it: two days for the dunes and fervedouros, one day for waterfalls and canyons, and a final day for the state park and river activities. If you have more time, consider a 7-day expedition to explore deeper into the Cerrado and visit the remote village of Mumbuca.
