Cutta Cutta Caves

Deep in the tropical woodlands south of Katherine, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park is a hidden underworld of ancient limestone caverns. These 500-million-year-old caves, formed from an ancient seabed, are a dramatic contrast to the sunburnt Top End landscape above. Guided tours lead you through cathedral-like chambers decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and delicate helictites, while the cool, humid air provides a welcome escape from the heat. The park is also a haven for wildlife, with bats, owls, and the occasional rock wallaby making an appearance.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1–2 hours, including the guided cave tour (book ahead in peak season) and a stroll on the nature walk. The caves are a quick detour from the Stuart Highway, so you can easily fit them into a half-day from Katherine or as a break on a longer drive between Darwin and Alice Springs.
