Once a bustling pearling port and the gateway to the Pilbara, Cossack today is a beautifully preserved ghost town that whispers stories of fortune, cyclones, and hard graft. Set on the banks of the Harding River, this tiny settlement is a must for history buffs and photographers, with its stone buildings, red-earth landscapes, and a palpable sense of frontier life.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Stone Buildings: Wander the eerily quiet streets lined with well-preserved 19th-century structures, including the courthouse, post office, and the old gaol. Each building has been restored and offers a glimpse into the town's pearling heyday.
- Cossack Museum: Housed in the former school, this excellent museum tells the story of the town's rise and fall through photographs, artefacts, and pearl-shell displays. Don't miss the old blacksmith's forge next door.
- Pearling History: Cossack was the centre of Australia's pearling industry in the 1860s-80s. Learn about the hard life of pearl divers, many of whom were Aboriginal and Asian men, and see a replica pearl lugger.
- Harding River Walk: Follow the riverbank trail for views across the mangrove-lined water and the occasional sighting of migratory birds. It's a peaceful spot for a picnic or a contemplative stroll.
- Photography: The combination of weathered stone, rusty corrugated iron, and wide blue skies makes Cossack a dream for photographers. Visit in the golden hour for the best light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty to explore Cossack thoroughly – two to three hours to see the museum and wander the buildings, plus time for a walk along the river. If you're keen on photography or want to soak up the atmosphere, you could stretch it to a full day with a picnic. There's no accommodation in town, so plan to base yourself in nearby Roebourne or Karratha.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Karratha: The region's main hub, 45 minutes west, offers supermarkets, accommodation, and the excellent Karratha Visitor Centre. Use it as a base to explore the Burrup Peninsula and its ancient rock art.
- Millstream-Chichester National Park: About an hour's drive south, this park features permanent waterholes, lush vegetation, and swimming spots like Python Pool – a welcome escape from the heat.
- Point Samson: A small fishing village 20 minutes north of Cossack, with a stunning beach, great snorkelling, and the famous 'Samson's Fish' fish and chips.
- Dampier Archipelago: A cluster of islands and the Burrup Peninsula, renowned for one of the world's largest collections of Aboriginal petroglyphs (rock engravings). Take a guided tour or explore the Murujuga National Park.
