Cooramucka Nature Reserve
Hidden in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Cooramucka Nature Reserve is a sanctuary of ancient Gondwana rainforest, rocky escarpments, and tumbling waterfalls. This pocket of wilderness rewards those who seek out its quiet trails with a sense of stepping back in time – the air is thick with the scent of damp earth and eucalyptus, and the only sounds are birdcalls and the rush of water. It’s a place for genuine immersion, not crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Mountain Lagoon Walking Track – A 4 km return walk that winds through subtropical rainforest and past a serene, tea-tree-tinted lagoon. Look for basking eastern water dragons and listen for the whipcrack call of the eastern whipbird.
- Cooramucka Falls – A stunning multi-tiered cascade that plunges into a deep pool. The short, steep detour from the main track is well worth the effort; after rain the falls are at their most dramatic.
- Birdwatching – The reserve is a hotspot for rainforest birds including regent bowerbirds, paradise riflebirds, and the elusive wompoo fruit-dove. Early morning is best for sightings.
- Ancient Antarctic Beech Trees – Along the higher sections of the track you’ll encounter these prehistoric trees, remnants of the supercontinent Gondwana. Their gnarled, moss-draped trunks are a photographer’s dream.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to explore the main walking track, take in the falls and lagoon, and enjoy a picnic. If you’re a keen birdwatcher or photographer, allow a full day to linger on the trails and absorb the atmosphere. The reserve is compact, so you can cover the highlights without rushing, but the serenity invites you to slow down.
