Coonawarra is a tiny but mighty wine region in South Australia’s Limestone Coast, famous for its distinctive ‘terra rossa’ red soil that produces some of Australia’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a place for serious wine lovers who appreciate a quiet, unpretentious tasting experience — think cellar doors in rustic sheds, long rows of vines stretching to the horizon, and a pace of life dictated by the seasons. Beyond the wine, you’ll find a landscape of volcanic cones, limestone caves and wildflower-filled conservation parks that invite exploration.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one full day in Coonawarra, which allows time to visit 4–6 cellar doors, take a short walk and enjoy a long lunch. If you’re a dedicated oenophile, two days gives you the chance to explore the entire Riddoch Highway without rush and also venture into nearby Padthaway or the volcanic landscapes of Mount Gambier. Plan your visit between October and April for the best weather and to catch the vines in full leaf.
