Clifden, a tiny settlement on New Zealand's South Island, is the gateway to the wild and spectacular Fiordland region. Nestled on the shores of Lake Te Anau, this remote outpost offers a true sense of isolation and immersion in nature. With the Fiordland National Park on its doorstep, Clifden is the perfect base for exploring some of the country's most dramatic landscapes, from deep fiords to ancient forests.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Clifden itself is a quick stop, but the surrounding Fiordland region deserves at least 3 to 4 days. Spend a day exploring the lake and local walks, then allocate 1-2 days for a trip to Milford Sound (allow a full day for the drive and cruise). If you're up for a longer hike, the Kepler Track takes 3-4 days. For a relaxed pace, base yourself in Te Anau (just 30 minutes north) and make day trips.
