Châtel
Perched in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, Châtel is a charming Alpine village that straddles the French-Swiss border. With its traditional chalets, year-round outdoor adventures, and a lively but laid-back atmosphere, it's a favourite for families and active travellers seeking authentic mountain culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Portes du Soleil Ski Area – One of the world's largest linked ski domains, offering over 600 km of pistes across France and Switzerland. Châtel provides direct access to this vast network, with slopes for all levels.
- Lac de Vonnes – A picturesque lake in the village centre, perfect for a summer swim, paddleboarding, or just relaxing on the grassy shores with a picnic.
- Linga & Super-Châtel Gondolas – These lifts whisk you up to high-altitude trails in summer and winter; the summit views over the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc are breathtaking.
- Châtel Cheese Dairy (Fruitière de Châtel) – Watch traditional Abondance cheese being made and sample the local specialities. A must for foodies.
- Summer Hiking & Mountain Biking – The area is crisscrossed with marked trails, from gentle family walks to challenging MTB descents. The nearby Pré-la-Joux plateau is a highlight.
- Swiss Border Crossing – Walk or cycle to the neighbouring village of Morgins (Switzerland) for a different flavour – and a passport stamp if you wish.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a satisfying visit, plan at least 3–4 days. This gives you time to explore the ski area or hiking trails, enjoy the village's restaurants and cheese dairy, and take a day trip across the border. If you're on a road trip through the Alps, even an overnight stop allows you to soak up the atmosphere and tackle one or two short hikes. In winter, a week is ideal to fully experience the slopes and après-ski.
