Deep in the Brocéliande forest of Brittany, Château de Comper rises from its lake like a page from a medieval romance. This 14th-century castle is legendary as the home of the fairy Viviane, the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian myth. Surrounded by water and ancient oaks, it offers a wonderfully atmospheric glimpse into both history and legend.
Highlights & What to See
- The castle exterior and lake setting – Walk the perimeter for postcard-perfect reflections of turrets and stone walls in the still water.
- Centre de l'Imaginaire Arthurien – A small but engaging museum dedicated to Arthurian legends, with exhibits on Merlin, the Grail, and the Lady of the Lake.
- Forest of Brocéliande walks – Follow trails from the castle into the enchanted forest, where you can find the Valley of No Return and Merlin's Tomb.
- Seasonal medieval festivals – Check for jousting tournaments, falconry displays, and storytelling events held on the grounds in summer.
