Cervantes
Just a two-hour drive north of Perth, Cervantes is a sleepy fishing village that punches well above its weight. The main draw is the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park, where thousands of ancient limestone pillars rise from golden sand dunes like a petrified forest. The town itself has a laid-back, salty charm, with a working lobster fleet and a handful of cafés serving the day's catch. It's an easy, rewarding day trip from Perth or a perfect stop on a longer Coral Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- The Pinnacles Desert – Drive or walk among the eerie limestone spires at sunrise or sunset, when the low light paints them gold and long shadows create a surreal landscape.
- Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre – A small but excellent museum that explains the geology and Aboriginal significance of the Pinnacles. The short boardwalk behind the centre offers a preview of the formations.
- Lake Thetis – One of the few places in the world where you can see living marine stromatolites, ancient microbial structures that resemble cabbage-shaped rocks. A boardwalk loops around the saline lake.
- Cervantes Lobster Shack – For the freshest Western Rock Lobster, head to this no-frills takeaway joint. Grab a half-lobster roll or a full grilled lobster and eat at a picnic table overlooking the marina.
- Hangover Bay – A beautiful, sheltered beach just south of town, perfect for a swim, a picnic, or spotting dolphins and sea lions.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day exploring the Pinnacles and Lake Thetis, then enjoy a lobster lunch in town. If you want to see the Pinnacles at sunset (highly recommended), plan for a full day and stay overnight. One night is enough to experience the quiet coastal vibe and watch the stars over the desert.
