Just a two-hour drive north of Perth, Cervantes is a sleepy fishing village that punches well above its weight thanks to the otherworldly Pinnacles Desert. The town itself is laid-back, with a working lobster fleet and a handful of cafes serving the day's catch. It's the kind of place where you can wander out to the jetty at sunset and have the Indian Ocean all to yourself.
Highlights & What to See
- The Pinnacles Desert – Nambung National Park's star attraction: thousands of ancient limestone pillars rising from golden sand. Drive the 4km loop or walk among them at dawn when the light turns the landscape honey-gold and kangaroos hop between the spires.
- Lake Thetis – One of the few places on Earth where you can see living stromatolites, the oldest known lifeforms. A short boardwalk loop explains their significance; go at low tide for the best views.
- Lobster Shack – Cervantes is the 'Rock Lobster Capital of WA'. Book a factory tour to see how they're processed, then stay for lunch: grilled lobster with garlic butter, eaten at a picnic table overlooking the marina.
- Hangover Bay – A gorgeous white-sand beach just south of town, perfect for a swim or a coastal walk. Less crowded than the main beach, and often you'll spot dolphins cruising past.
- Cervantes Jetty & Foreshore – A short stroll from the town centre, the jetty is great for fishing or just watching the pelicans. The adjacent park has barbecues and a playground, ideal for a family picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come on a day trip from Perth, but to really appreciate the area, stay one night. Arrive in the early afternoon, visit the Pinnacles for sunset (the colours are spectacular), then enjoy a seafood dinner. The next morning, explore Lake Thetis and Hangover Bay before heading back. If you're self-driving, this makes a relaxed overnight stop on a longer Coral Coast itinerary.

- The Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre – An excellent interpretive centre at the park entrance, worth a stop before or after driving the desert loop.
- Stockyard Gully National Park – About an hour east, a wild place with a limestone cave system you can explore with a torch (4WD recommended).
- Lancelin – Famous for its huge white sand dunes, 45 minutes south, where you can try sandboarding or quad biking.
- Yanchep National Park – On the way from Perth, 90 minutes south, with koalas, kangaroos, and limestone caves. A good place to break the drive.
