With its intoxicating blend of Spanish colonial history, world-class diving, and a vibrant urban pulse, Cebu is the Philippines' oldest city and a gateway to some of the country's most spectacular islands. The Queen City of the South offers everything from ancient churches and fortresses to whale shark encounters and coral gardens, all wrapped in the warm, easygoing charm of the Visayan people.
Highlights & What to See
- Magellan's Cross & Basilica Minore del Santo Niño – The very spot where Christianity took root in the Philippines. The cross housed in a small chapel and the adjacent basilica are pilgrimage sites brimming with history and devotion.
- Fort San Pedro – A triangular military outpost built by Spanish conquistadors, now a peaceful museum with manicured gardens and views of the pier.
- Kawasan Falls – A multi-tiered cascade in the lush jungle of Badian. Swim in the turquoise pools, cliff-jump, or canyoneer through the gorge for an adrenaline fix.
- Oslob Whale Shark Watching – A controversial but unforgettable experience: snorkel alongside gentle whale sharks in their natural habitat. Go early to avoid crowds and respect the guidelines.
- Moalboal – A laid-back diving and snorkeling hub famous for its sardine run, where millions of silvery fish swirl in hypnotic clouds just offshore. Also a base for canyoneering at Kawasan.
- Osmeña Peak – The highest point in Cebu, offering a relatively easy hike to a ridge of jagged limestone peaks with sweeping views of the island and sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least four to five days to Cebu to experience its contrasts. Spend the first day exploring Cebu City's colonial core (Magellan's Cross, Basilica, Fort San Pedro) and the bustling Carbon Market. Then head south for two nights: base yourself in Moalboal for the sardine run and a day of canyoneering at Kawasan Falls. If you're set on whale sharks, add a night in Oslob. A final day could be a hike up Osmeña Peak or a relaxed beach day on the nearby islands of Sumilon or Bantayan. If you're short on time, two days is enough for the city highlights and a quick trip to Kawasan.
