Imagine a coastline where bone-white sand meets turquoise water, and ancient granite outcrops rise like sculptures against a deep blue sky. Cape Le Grand National Park, a 30-minute drive east of Esperance in Western Australia’s Goldfields-Esperance region, is a place of wild, elemental beauty. This is a landscape that rewards exploration—whether you’re hiking to the top of Frenchman Peak, swimming in the calm waters of Lucky Bay, or simply watching the sunset paint the granite boulders in shades of ochre and gold.
Highlights & What to See
- Lucky Bay – Frequently voted Australia’s best beach, this crescent of white sand and impossibly clear water is also a hangout for friendly kangaroos. Walk south along the sand for solitude and views of offshore islands.
- Frenchman Peak – A challenging but rewarding 2.5 km return hike to the summit (262 m) offers panoramic views of the park and the Recherche Archipelago. The peak’s distinctive shape and cave-like summit are geologically fascinating.
- Hellfire Bay – A smaller, more intimate beach with striking turquoise water and granite boulders at its edges. Perfect for a quiet swim or picnic.
- Thistle Cove – Named for the endemic thistle-like plants, this cove has a short walking trail leading to a lookout over the bay. The rock formations here are wonderfully sculpted by wind and sea.
- Cape Le Grand Beach – A long, wild beach with powerful surf, popular for fishing and long walks. The 4WD track to the cape itself is a fun adventure.
- Le Grand Coastal Trail – A 15 km one-way walk linking the main beaches, ideal for a full-day hike with stunning coastal perspectives. You can arrange a car shuttle or walk a shorter section.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly soak in Cape Le Grand, plan for at least a full day. This allows time for one or two short hikes (like Frenchman Peak and the coastal trail section), plus lazy beach time at Lucky Bay and a picnic lunch. If you have two days, you can explore more remote beaches, attempt the full Le Grand Coastal Trail, and enjoy sunrise and sunset from different vantage points. The park is also a wonderful stop on a longer self-drive itinerary along the south coast—many travellers spend a night at the basic campground or in Esperance.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Esperance – The gateway town, with excellent cafes, the Esperance Museum, and the Great Ocean Drive scenic loop.
- Stokes National Park – A smaller coastal park to the west, with the picturesque Stokes Inlet and a beautiful sandy beach.
- Recherche Archipelago – A group of 105 islands visible from the park; boat tours from Esperance offer wildlife viewing (seals, seabirds) and island landings.
- Fitzgerald River National Park – A two-hour drive west, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a biodiversity hotspot with incredible wildflower displays in spring.
- Wave Rock – While a bit of a detour (about 4 hours north), this iconic granite formation is a classic Australian road-trip stop.
