The Canning Stock Route is one of Australia's most remote and challenging 4WD adventures, stretching over 1,850 km from Wiluna in Western Australia to Halls Creek. This historic route, originally a droving track for cattle, traverses the heart of the Gibson, Great Sandy, and Tanami deserts, offering a raw, unfiltered encounter with the harsh beauty of the Outback. For seasoned travelers, it’s a pilgrimage into Aboriginal culture, rugged landscapes, and star-filled skies.
Highlights & What to See
- Well 37 (Kunawarritji) – A key Aboriginal community and cultural site with rock art and engravings; a rare chance to learn about traditional life.
- Durba Springs – A stunning oasis with permanent waterholes and ancient rock paintings, perfect for a rest stop.
- Windich Springs – A scenic, often dry lakebed surrounded by red dunes and spinifex, offering eerie beauty and solitude.
- Georgia Bore – A reliable water point and campsite with a windmill; great for birdwatching and stargazing.
- Lake Auld – A vast salt lake that shimmers in the sun, providing a surreal, otherworldly landscape.
- Aboriginal rock art and engravings – Scattered along the route, particularly near wells, these artworks offer deep cultural insight (respectfully view from a distance).
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 10–14 days to complete the entire route, though many travelers take 2–3 weeks to fully absorb the experience. Pace yourself: drive only in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid extreme heat, and plan for rest days at key wells. Most travelers travel in convoys of 2–4 vehicles and carry all supplies (fuel, water, food) for the entire journey, as there are no services along the route.
