Wiluna sits at the edge of the red centre, a remote gold-mining town that feels like a frontier outpost. The vast, empty landscapes and deep Aboriginal cultural heritage give it a raw, off-the-beaten-track appeal. It's a place for travellers who want to experience the real, unvarnished outback – think red dust, endless horizons, and a palpable sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Wiluna Gold Mine & Heritage Walk: Trace the town's gold-rush past on a self-guided walk past historic mine shafts, old machinery and the original post office – a gritty lesson in outback boom-and-bust.
- Lake Way: A vast, shimmering salt lake just south of town. At sunset the salt crust turns pink and gold, and the silence is deafening – perfect for photography and solitude.
- Canning Stock Route start/finish point: Wiluna marks the southern terminus of this legendary 4WD route. Even if you're not tackling the whole track, the plaque and the sense of adventure are worth a look.
- Aboriginal rock art & Tjukurpa (Dreaming) sites: The surrounding country is rich with Martu stories. You'll need a local guide to access some sites, but the experience is unforgettable – ancient engravings and paintings that tell of creation beings.
- Wiluna Remote Community School Mural: A vibrant, community-painted mural that tells the story of the Martu people and the land – a quick but moving stop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Wiluna is a stopover rather than a destination in itself. One full day is enough to explore the town and Lake Way, plus a half-day if you arrange a guided cultural tour. Most travellers use it as an overnight rest before or after the Canning Stock Route, or as a base to explore the surrounding stations and salt lakes. Plan to arrive early afternoon so you can catch sunset at Lake Way.
