Camp Cove is a sheltered, sandy crescent on the southern side of Sydney Harbour, just a short ferry ride from the city. This historic beach was the landing site of the First Fleet's Governor Arthur Phillip in 1788, and today it offers a calm, family-friendly escape with stunning views across the harbour to the Heads. The gentle waters make it perfect for swimming, kayaking, or simply lazing on the sand.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the clear, calm waters – Protected from ocean swells, Camp Cove is ideal for a safe dip, with a netted swimming area during summer.
- Walk to South Head – A scenic coastal path leads to the historic Hornby Lighthouse and offers panoramic views of the Pacific and harbour entrance.
- Snorkel the rocky edges – The rocks at either end of the beach are home to colourful fish and marine life, especially at high tide.
- Picnic with a view – The grassy reserve behind the beach has picnic tables and barbecues, perfect for a relaxed lunch overlooking the water.
- Spot historic landmarks – Look for the obelisk marking the site of the first landing, and the nearby military fortifications at South Head.
Suggested Time to Spend
Camp Cove is a half-day destination. Arrive mid-morning to claim a spot, swim and snorkel until lunch, then walk to the lighthouse and back. If you're combining with a visit to Watsons Bay, you can easily spend a full day exploring both. The beach is small, so it can get busy on weekends; aim for a weekday visit for a quieter experience.
