On the northern banks of the Parramatta River, Cabarita is a leafy riverside suburb that feels a world away from Sydney’s CBD, yet is only 15 km west of the city. Its name derives from an Aboriginal word for ‘by the water’, and with a long, grassy foreshore park, a historic ferry wharf and a relaxed local café culture, it’s a perfect spot for a peaceful escape or a stop on a river-centric itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Cabarita Park – This sprawling green space is the suburb’s heart, offering picnic tables, barbecue facilities, a children’s playground and stunning views across the Parramatta River. It’s an ideal place to watch the ferries glide by or simply unwind under a fig tree.
- Cabarita Wharf & Ferry – Catch a ferry from Circular Quay or Parramatta to this historic wharf; the journey itself is a highlight, passing through Sydney Harbour and the river’s mangrove-lined banks.
- Riverside Walk – A paved path runs along the water from Cabarita Park towards Kissing Point, perfect for a morning stroll or jog with constant river views.
- Cabarita Café – A local favourite, this waterside café serves excellent coffee, fresh juices and simple, tasty meals – grab a table on the deck and watch the boats.
- Kissing Point Bay – A short walk east, this small bay offers a quiet beach and more picnic spots, often less crowded than the main park.
Suggested Time to Spend
Cabarita is a half-day destination. Arrive by ferry for a scenic trip, spend a couple of hours exploring the park, enjoying a coffee and walking the foreshore, then head back. If you’re self-driving, combine it with a visit to nearby suburbs along the river – you could easily spend two to three hours here, including a leisurely lunch.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Putney – Just across the river, Putney has a similar riverside park and a popular weekend market.
- Ryde – A larger centre with shops, restaurants and the historic Ryde Wharf.
- Gladesville – Known for its heritage houses and the scenic Gladesville Bridge lookout.
- Parramatta – The historic heart of Western Sydney, with its own ferry terminal, colonial sites and a vibrant dining scene.
- Kissing Point – A smaller, quieter bay adjacent to Cabarita, perfect for a peaceful walk.
