Burleigh Heads National Park is a pocket-sized coastal wonder on the Gold Coast, where ancient rainforest meets the Pacific. The park's centrepiece is the Burleigh Headland, a rocky outcrop that offers sweeping ocean views, whale-watching opportunities, and a lush escape from the beach crowds. It's a place where you can swim in the morning, hike through subtropical rainforest by midday, and watch the sunset over the sea—all within a few hours. The park is a favourite among locals for its easy accessibility and rich biodiversity, including koalas and sea eagles.
Highlights & What to See
- Ocean View Track: A 2.3 km loop that hugs the coastline, offering panoramic views of the Gold Coast skyline, Surfers Paradise, and the Pacific. Keep an eye out for migrating humpback whales (June–November).
- Rainforest Circuit: A short, shaded walk through a subtropical rainforest canopy, with ancient fig trees and the chance to spot koalas dozing in the branches.
- Tumgun Lookout: A prime spot for whale watching and birdwatching, perched on the headland with benches for contemplation.
- Burleigh Beach: The adjacent patrolled beach is perfect for a swim or surf after your walk, with a laid-back vibe and rock pools to explore at low tide.
- Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre: Just outside the park, learn about the local Yugambeh people's connection to the headland through guided tours and cultural experiences.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours walking the tracks and soaking in the views, but you can easily extend that to a half-day by adding a beach session or picnic. The Ocean View Track takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace, while the Rainforest Circuit is a quick 15-minute detour. If you're combining with a swim or surf, plan for 3–4 hours. The park is small but offers a surprising amount of variety; you could also visit for a sunset stroll and dinner at one of the nearby cafes in Burleigh Heads.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
